5 Ways for your office to go plastic free!

In North America we consume a staggering 240bn bottles a year, which contributes heavily to the total 10.5m tons of plastic consumed across the country every year. And this is only going to increase in the foreseeable future as the bottled water industry continues to boom.

One of the biggest problems associated with this consumer behavior is the fact that just 1% of this plastic waste is recycled with only 75% of all plastic bottles used is being recycled. This is resulting in huge amounts of non-degradable items ending up in landfill and polluting our oceans.

In an aim to reduce this environmental concern, every July is National Plastic Free month, challenging people to attempt to refuse single-use plastic during July. Here, at Waterlogic, we’ve formulated a simple and easy way to remember to reduce the amount of plastic you use at your workplace. We call it the 5 R Method: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Raising Awareness.

Refuse

In any instances that you might not be able to recycle then refuse to purchase or consume. Simply avoid using plastic bottles, plastic bags, straws, cups and plates that cannot be reused over time. Use long-lasting, glass or paper alternatives. If your office installs a bottleless water cooler, then you can also enjoy fresh pure water in a way that is far more sustainable, without the need for any recycling.

Reduce

Unfortunately, there may always be situations where you simply cannot avoid buying plastic. In these situations try to reduce the amount that is used at home and at your business. Use glass bottles of milk for your coffee, rather than plastic. Purchase a reusable lunch bag/box to carry around your lunch rather than a plastic bag. You can even store office items in cardboard boxes, which are much more environmentally friendly. The main focus is reducing the amount of plastic being discarded.

Reuse

Reusing more durable containers to store food and beverages that you can take to work is a great way to reduce how much plastic is used. Reusable items that are nontoxic can easily replace plastics. Use things such as Tupperware (plastic or glass) containers for storing food or reusable canvas bags for shopping. You can even use reusable bottles at work to fill up at your bottleless water dispenser during your workday.

Recycle

With less than 1% of plastic being recycled across the entire Unites States, there is so much we can all do to recycle more at home and at work. One of the most effective actions you can take at your office is to implement specific and clearly labelled recycling bins. Making recycling as easy as possible can be the first step to dramatically increasing the sustainability of your workplace. This allows you to recycle paper, cardboard and printer cartridges on a daily basis rather than these items ending up in landfill or our oceans.

Raise Awareness

Taking part in the previous four R’s are a great step into turning your business office and workplace into a more green-friendly environment. However, the biggest way to completely remove plastic from yours and other workplaces is to raise awareness of the problem. Informing co-workers, family and friends how they can help and get involved by implementing the 5 R’s in their life and help in having a plastic free June.

Drinking more water in the workplace

We’ve all heard it before, drinking water is good for dozens reasons. Nearly every health and fitness magazine tells you that drinking gallons of water will give you more luscious hair, brighter skin, and make you more productive, successful, and a generally healthier person. Truly, all healthy roads seem to lead to drinking more water. With every gulp, water helps you control calorie consumption, keep us energized while exercising, aid in digestion, boost kidney function, and improve your skin. However, most of us are guilty of not drinking enough of the good old H2O because we are either too busy or simply don't like how it tastes. This can be a particular problem when you have deadlines to meet during the day in your place of work. If hydrating has become more of a chore rather than a healthy habit for you, here are five easy ways to stay hydrated throughout the day at work.

1. Add a natural fruit to make a tasty fruit infusion

If you find water bland and tasteless, jazz up your replenishing experience by infusing your water with orange slices, watermelon chunks, lemons, kiwis, or raspberries. You can even freeze the fruit and use it instead of ice cubes for cooler water. If you miss the fizz or carbonation from sodas, try a club soda or sparkling water.

2. Use a water drinking app

There are tons of apps available to help you solve your hydration woes. These apps keep track of how many glasses or ounces of water you have consumed. You can also get a tech-savvy smart water bottle that connects with your phone to log sips and reminds you how much you have left for the day. There is no better mental trigger than a loud jingle or notification alert to get you back on your hydration track.

3. Bring a durable, reusable water bottle which you can refill

Pushing yourself to hydrate more often may come down to purchasing a pretty new reusable water bottle. Just like a brand spanking new outfit or new shoes can motivate you when you start your day, a trendy water bottle can motivate you to regularly refilling throughout the day.

4. Eat water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables

There are many of fruits and vegetables that contain a fair amount of water. Sneak water-rich fruits and veggies like lettuce, cucumbers, strawberries, watermelon, apricots, zucchini, cherries, spinach, broccoli, and tomatoes into our diet to stay hydrated. However, even though fruits and vegetables are a great source of water, they won't give you your required daily water intake. Therefore we still recommend that you drink water throughout the day.

5. Use a bottleless water cooler

Carrying around water in a bottle every day is not only a pain but plastic bottles are also bad for the environment. If your workplace has a bottleless water cooler installed, you’ll be able to access a limitless supply of purified and chilled water each and every day. And as a bottleless system is directly fitted to your building’s water supply you’ll never have the hassle of carrying around your water all day.

By following to these five simple tips and tricks, you will learn to love the taste of water, prioritize your sips, and lead a healthier and more fulfilling life. Need a Bottleless cooler? Call us today 506-847-3202!
